Dear Colleagues,

Since its first issue published in 1978 under the title “The Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery” our journal underwent many changes from its title and publication frequency to the databases in which the journal is indexed and its mode of publication. The primary objective of these changes has always been to move our journal further forward.

In our archives, we see that the title of our journal was changed to “The Turkish Journal of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery” as of the September–December 2000 issue (Vol 8, Issue 3), and as a Turkish-English bilingual publication, the English title was simplified and revised as “The Turkish Journal of Plastic Surgery” in 2008. While previously a common title abbreviation was, unfortunately, not used, first the title abbreviation “Turk Plast Surg” was adopted in 2008, and then “Turk J Plast Surg” in 2016 after which the journal was cited under this abbreviation in all indexes.

Given the cost of printing and distribution, the difficulties in archiving past issues and the challenges of conducting search in printed archives, our journal continued as a digital-only publication as of 2008. In this process, we began to publish our journal through the Open Journal System with the contributions of Professor Dr. Mustafa Yılmaz, thereby eliminating printing and distribution costs. Throughout this period, all processes from the design and page layout to editing and digital publication were performed on a voluntary basis.

The transformation of our journal nevertheless continued with a presence in indexes such as Scopus, Index Copernicus, Embase, EBSCO-Host, Turk Medline, and Directory of Open Access Journals.

Since the beginning, our journal was being published three issues per year; however, with the increase in the number of submissions, we increased this frequency to four issues per year in 2016. In the same period, to help expand the journal's presence in international indexes, we initiated the process of translating into English the articles submitted in Turkish-only with the support of The Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeons. In the same year, we contracted the services of Aves Publishing who published our journal for 2 years and renewed the interface of our journal website. In 2018, we contracted the services of Wolters Kluwer – Medknow, which incorporates brands such as Lippincott; and our journal is published by these publishers since the beginning of this year. The major benefit that our collaboration with professional international publishers has brought us is presence and visibility on international platforms. As a result, presently, we are receiving manuscript submissions from many countries outside of Turkey.

The Turkish Journal of Plastic Surgery is also indexed in the ULAKBİM-TR directory since 2017. This means that our journal meets both the criteria for associate professorship applications in the area of health-care sciences and the printed publication criteria of the Academic Incentives Guidelines.

One remarkable success that our journal achieved in the recent period is the presence we gained in the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI). As known, Clarivate Analytics (formerly Thomson Reuters) established their ESCI index in 2015 to monitor the journals that meet certain criteria before including these in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI) and the SCI. Our inclusion in the ESCI index is an indicator that we are yet another step closer to our ultimate goal of gaining presence in the SCI.

It is extremely gratifying to see that Turkish authors find presence in almost every issue of international scientific journals published in the field of plastic surgery. We believe that our journal will be listed in more significant indexes once this wealth of manuscripts is directed to The Turkish Journal of Plastic Surgery. Your valuable contributions will make our journal ever stronger.
